Abstract
Introduction:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a chronic condition that presents in early childhood majorly affecting the emotional, academic, and social functioning of the child. A 4-year-old male child, a diagnosed case of ADHD, presented at the Paediatric OPD of the teaching hospital, Mysuru, Karnataka with the complaints of hyperactivity, irritability, poor attention, improper social behaviour, and delayed speech since 2 years. Disturbed sleep and poor appetite were the associated features. The clinical presentation was near similar to the condition named ‘Unmada’ in Ayurveda with Vata Dosha (One of the body humors) predominance. The management protocol was finalised based on this diagnosis, which included Ayurveda therapies like Snehana (external oleation) Basti (medicated enema) and oral medications along with Occupational and Speech therapies.
Materials and methods:
Treatment duration was 1 year, there were 3 sittings with the interval of 2-3 months after each clinical visit. SWAN Rating scale was used for assessment. Purificatory therapies, internal medications, and suitable dietary modifications were incorporated.
Results: According to the assessment done before the treatment, patient who was evaluated as combined type of ADHD, while after the treatment the evaluation score falls under inattentive category of ADHD.
Principle Conclusion: Comprehensive approach including Ayurveda management with Speech and Occupational therapies led to more efficient management of ADHD. No adverse effects were reported during and after the treatment.
