Abstract
Background: Kaphaja Kasa, described in classical Ayurveda literature, is a Kaphadominant respiratory disorder characterised by productive cough, thick sputum, chest heaviness, and airway congestion. It closely correlates with chronic bronchitis, a chronic inflammatory condition marked by mucus hypersecretion, airway narrowing, and recurrent infections. Devdarvyadi Churna is a classical polyherbal preparation commonly used in treating respiratory diseases like Kasa (Cough). It is therefore necessary to have scientific evidence regarding its phytochemical profile. Objective: The aim was to conduct phytochemical analysis of Devdarvyadi Churna for volatile and semi-volatile phytoconstituents involved in treating Kaphaja Kasa (chronic bronchitis). Methods: Devdarvyadi Churna was prepared according to classical Ayurveda procedures using validated raw drugs. Phytochemical analysis was done using a GC–MS-QP series system with a Rtx-5MS column under standardized conditions. Phytoconstituents were identified using comparison of mass spectra to reference libraries. Results: Several phytoconstituents were identified through phytochemical analysis of Devdarvyadi Churna. The major phytoconstituents in Devdarvyadi Churna were 2,4-Decadienamide, Nisobutyl- (E, E) (48.24%), followed by Piperine (15.62%) and Retrofractamide-A (6.44%). Other phytoconstituents present include organic acid esters, alkamides, oxime analogs, and antimicrobial alcohols. The various activities of these phytoconstituents are anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, mucolytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. Conclusion: This research study generated the GC–MS fingerprint profile of Devdarvyadi Churna, which supports its classical indication and utilisation in Kaphaja Kasa.
