Association between Digestive and Metabolic status with Haematological parameters in healthy individuals: A cross-sectional study

Abstract
Background: In Ayurveda, Agni represents the biological force responsible for digestion, metabolism, and tissue nourishment. Among the thirteen types of Agni (digestive fire), Jatharagni (primary digestive fire located in the gastrointestinal tract) is regarded as the primary type that regulates the transformation of food into nutrients and supports the formation of body tissues (Dhatu). Disturbances in Jatharagni influence physiological functions and metabolic processes. Modern haematological parameters such as haemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell count (RBC), white blood cell count (WBC), and platelet count provide objective indicators of systemic health. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between types of Jatharagni and haematological parameters assessed through Complete Blood Count (CBC) in healthy individuals. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 100 healthy individuals aged 20–35 years. Jatharagni was assessed using a standardised Agni Parikshana questionnaire based on parameters such as Abhyavaharana Shakti (capacity to consume food) and Jaranashakti (digestive capacity). Haematological parameters were evaluated through laboratory-based CBC testing. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Chi-square test and ANOVA were applied to determine the association between Agni types and CBC parameters. Results: Among the participants, 49 exhibited Tikshnagni (hyperactive digestive capacity), 41 had Mandagni (weak digestive capacity), 7 had Vishamagni (irregular digestive capacity), and 3 had Samagni (balanced digestive capacity). Individuals with Tikshnagni demonstrated comparatively higher mean haemoglobin and RBC values. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between Jatharagni types and haematological parameters (Chi-square = 29.44, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The findings of the present study reveal a statistically significant relationship between Jatharagni status and haematological parameters. Individuals with Samagni and Tikshnagni demonstrated comparatively better haematological values, whereas those with Mandagni showed relatively lower values. suggesting that increased digestive and metabolic activity is associated with improved haematological profile.
